French Country Bedroom Makeover on a Budget
After living in any home for 5 years I begin to want to make changes to the decor. I really liked some of the French country influences that were showing up in design and decided to use that idea to add some new touches to our space. I like to create things that are easy on the budget and fun to do so I started looking through thrift shops and my home to see what I could use.
I had a lamp with a small tear in the lampshade so I painted the whole lamp including the shade antique white, sanded the corners and crevices to antique it and added a new tassel to the chain.
I didn't want to throw out my amber coloured Apothecary jars so I wanted to see what they would look like painted. I used 2 or 3 coats of Martha Stewart ivory acrylic paint and they turned out really well. I added some words in my own handwrinting with a gold marker. I love all the beautiful fonts that people are using now and they look so professional but I think its important to use your own unique handwriting on occasion as it makes it more personal.
I found some silver vintage containers and left the old patina and added some artificial hydrangeas to them to look vintage French.
For this sign I found the frame at Pier 1 on sale for $18. I painted the canvas that was in it white. Then I used some stickers as well as my own letters to spell out the saying I wanted. I also used sticky paper to create the rose motif. Then I painted the whole canvas blue with a small roller. I removed the stickers and love how French it looks in my bedroom.
For this mirror I painted an old frame white and then took it to a glass shop where they cut and installed the mirror for $11. It looks lovely as it reflects my crystal chandelier and my watercolour that I painted after my visit to Paris.
To display my photos of the grandchildren I used only white frames. I printed the line from Elton John's song "Your Song" on scrapbook paper using the Desdemona font. I then filled it in with a gold marker and framed it in a vintage frame I picked up at Home Sense.
The bathroom shelves were purchased at Target and I added a wire basket for towels and some other items that give it a French vibe. For the 'Joie de vivre' sign I used a white marker on a blackboard sticker covered photo frame.
I inherited a few chairs from my mother. I sanded and painted the wood with a linen coloured chalk paint and love the new look. I haven't decided yet if I am going to paint or change out the fabric. I'm also thinking of changing the trim. I will keep you posted.
I took a few old photos of when my mom was young and had them enlarged in a sepia tone at Staples for a few dollars. I framed them with a cream mat and a dark brown frame. They add some vintage nostalgia to the space.
